Formatting item details with bold and bullet lists

Every timeline item has a Details box: the notes that ride along with an activity and show up on the crew's live run of show and the printed BEO. A cue list, a kit checklist, a running order for a set. Plain text turned any list you typed there into a wall of run-on words, so the Details box now understands a tiny bit of formatting: bold for the thing that matters, bullet points for a list, and a red accent for a warning. It stays a plain text box you type into, no separate editor to open, so it is quick to use on a busy row.

The formatting toolbar

Open the event in the planner and click into the Details box on any timeline item. A small toolbar appears just below the box while the field is focused, with two buttons:

  • B wraps the selected text in asterisks, so *load in through the dock* renders bold.
  • The bullet button drops a bullet marker at the cursor, ready for you to type the line.

Click away and the toolbar tucks itself back out of the way, and your Details are saved automatically, the same save-on-blur as the rest of the row. There is nothing to submit.

The markup, if you would rather type it

The toolbar just inserts the same plain markers you can type by hand, so you never have to reach for it:

  • Bold: wrap words in asterisks, *like this*.
  • Bullet list: start a line with a bullet () or a dash (-) followed by a space. Consecutive bullet lines become a proper indented list, and a wrapped line hangs under the text rather than under the bullet. A dash in the middle of a sentence ("Mum - brother - nieces") is left alone; only a dash at the very start of a line becomes a bullet.
  • Red accent: wrap words in equals signs, =do not open the main doors before 6=, to render them in the brand's warning red. Use it sparingly, for the one thing on the item a crew member must not miss.

Plain line breaks are kept as you typed them, so you can lay out a few short lines without them collapsing together.

A worked example. Typing this into an item's Details:

Sound check running order:
- Band line check
- *Vocals* last
=Doors stay shut until check is done=

renders on the crew view as a heading line, a two-point bulleted list with "Vocals" in bold, and a red warning line underneath.

Where the formatting shows up

Details render with this formatting on the two surfaces crew and the kitchen actually read from: the live crew run of show and the printed BEO / function sheet. Anything you already had in a Details box before this existed keeps working untouched; plain notes simply render as plain notes, and there was no reformatting or migration to do.

A note on item descriptions elsewhere

The same light *bold* and bullet markup is available on the description fields in your Items catalog, so a package or line item you sell can carry a formatted description onto a client-facing quote or confirmation. One deliberate difference: the red =accent= is switched off on those client-facing line descriptions, so a stray equals sign on a formal quote stays literal rather than turning red. The red accent is a crew-facing signal, so it lives on the run of show, not on documents you send to a client.

Good to know

  • It is still just text. The Details box is a plain textarea, saved as a plain string. That keeps every timeline row fast to edit even on a long run of show, and means the markup is easy to read and undo, just delete the asterisks or equals signs.
  • A lone or unmatched marker renders literally. A single * with no partner, or an equals sign on its own, shows as the character you typed. A marker cannot span a line break either, so an unclosed * at the end of a line just stays a *.
  • Keep it flat. Bold, bullets and the accent are meant to be used one at a time for clarity, not nested into elaborate layouts. If a Details box is growing complicated, it is often a sign the information wants to be its own item or an attached file.
